This classic vegan apple crumble is a warm and comforting dessert featuring tender spiced apples topped with a buttery, crumbly topping. Perfect for fall or any time you crave a cozy sweet treat, it’s dairy-free, egg-free, and packed with autumnal flavors like cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice.

Ingredients

For the Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup of granulated sugar
  • ½ cup of packed brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt
  • ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup of melted vegan butter

For the Apple Filling

  • 5 cooking apples (peeled, cored and sliced)
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • ½ cup of granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup of packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup of flour
  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon
  • ½ tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Grease an 8×8 inch baking dish to prevent sticking and ensure easy serving.
  2. Make the Crumble Topping: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Pour in the melted vegan butter and use a fork to mix and cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large bowl, mix together the peeled, cored, and sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice. Stir until the apples are evenly coated with the mixture.
  4. Assemble: Fill the prepared baking dish with the apple filling, packing it almost to the top so the apples are nearly spilling out.
  5. Add Topping and Bake: Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple filling. Bake in the preheated oven for 50 to 55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  6. Rest and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the apple crumble stand for 10 minutes to thicken and set before serving. Enjoy warm as is or with vegan ice cream.

Notes

  • Using cooking apples like Granny Smith or Braeburn ensures the filling holds up well and balances sweetness with tartness.
  • Make sure to melt the vegan butter but not too hot; it should be warm enough to mix easily without cooking the sugars.
  • You can add chopped nuts (like walnuts or pecans) to the crumble topping for extra texture.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, and reheat before serving.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free baking blend.
