Crunchy and flavorful sourdough croutons made from cubed sourdough bread tossed in olive oil and seasonings, then baked to golden perfection. These homemade croutons add a delicious, crispy texture to salads, soups, or as a snack.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups sourdough bread, cut or torn into 1-inch cubes
  • 23 tablespoons olive oil (or use spray olive oil for a lighter version)
  • Generous pinch salt and black pepper (to taste)

Optional Additions

  • 1 finely minced garlic clove (or 1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic powder)
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, sage, or thyme
  • Lemon zest (to taste)
  • Parmesan cheese (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the croutons evenly.
  2. Toss Bread Cubes: In a large bowl, toss the 1-inch cubed sourdough bread with 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil until the bread is lightly coated. If you prefer a lighter version, you can use spray olive oil to coat the bread sparingly.
  3. Season: Add a generous pinch of salt and black pepper along with any optional seasonings such as minced garlic, Italian seasoning, onion powder, smoked paprika, fresh herbs, lemon zest, or parmesan. Toss everything well to ensure even seasoning. Taste one cube and adjust salt and seasoning to your preference.
  4. Arrange on Baking Sheet: Spread the seasoned bread cubes in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet to ensure even baking and crispiness.
  5. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes. Remove the pan and give the croutons a good stir to promote even browning. Continue baking for another 3-5 minutes or until the croutons are golden brown and fragrant.
  6. Cool and Store: Let the croutons cool completely on the baking sheet. Store them in a sealed container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks to maintain their crispness.

Notes

  • Use spray olive oil for a lighter coating of oil if desired.
  • Optional seasonings can be mixed and matched according to your taste preferences.
  • Ensure croutons are spread in a single layer to prevent sogginess and promote even crisping.
  • Store cooled croutons in an airtight container to keep them crunchy.
