This simple custard recipe combines milk, eggs, sugar, and cornstarch to create a smooth, velvety dessert that is mildly sweet and not overly rich. It can be enjoyed warm immediately or chilled for a refreshing treat. Perfect as a quick homemade dessert or a base for other creamy desserts.

Ingredients

Custard Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 4 large eggs
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Gather Ingredients: Collect all your ingredients and have them ready for easy cooking.
  2. Heat Milk Mixture: In a saucepan, combine the milk, vanilla extract, and butter. Place over medium heat and stir occasionally until it reaches a simmer. Make sure to remove it from the heat just before it comes to a boil to prevent scalding.
  3. Prepare Egg Mixture: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and cornstarch until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
  4. Combine and Thicken: Return the saucepan to low heat. Slowly pour the egg mixture into the warm milk mixture while whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Continue cooking and stirring gently for 5 to 10 minutes until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Serve or Chill: You can enjoy the custard warm immediately or transfer it to a large bowl, cover, and allow it to cool completely before chilling in the refrigerator for later enjoyment.

Notes

  • For a sweeter custard, add up to ¼ cup more sugar.
  • Mixing in crushed pineapple or mashed banana adds a delicious fruity twist.
  • To prevent curdling, pour the egg mixture slowly and whisk constantly when combining with the hot milk.
  • Custard can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to three days.
  • Freezing custard is possible for up to three months but may affect texture.
