Using food coloring to dye shredded white cheese, each sandwich features a bright, melty rainbow interior baked to golden perfection in the oven. Perfect for a fun and easy meal that delights both kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

Bread

  • 12 slices sandwich bread

Cheese

  • 16 ounces white shredded cheese (such as mozzarella or white cheddar)

Coloring

  • Food coloring gel (various colors, 2–5 drops per portion)

Butter & Cooking Spray

  • Butter, softened, or nonstick cooking spray for greasing (about 2 tablespoons butter or equivalent spray)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil to make cleanup easier and prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Bottom Bread: Arrange 6 slices of sandwich bread on the prepared baking sheet. Lightly butter or spray one side of each slice, then flip each so the buttered side is placed down directly onto the baking sheet.
  3. Color the Cheese: Divide the 16 ounces of shredded white cheese evenly into small bowls or resealable plastic bags. Add 2 to 5 drops of different food coloring gels to each portion and mix thoroughly until the cheese is evenly colored.
  4. Assemble the Sandwiches: Evenly distribute the colored cheese portions over the prepared bread slices on the baking sheet. Place the remaining 6 bread slices on top. Butter or spray the tops of the sandwich slices generously.
  5. Bake & Flip: Bake the sandwiches in the preheated oven for 5 minutes. Carefully flip each sandwich over, being gentle to keep the cheese intact. Return them to the oven and bake for an additional 3 to 5 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.
  6. Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the oven and let them cool slightly for a minute or two. Serve warm to enjoy the colorful, melted cheese and crunchy golden crust.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for the best vibrant colors without affecting cheese texture or moisture.
  • You can use a mix of cheeses if desired, but ensure they melt well and are white or pale in color for best results.
  • Be careful when flipping the sandwiches to avoid spilling the colored cheese.
  • This recipe can be adapted for gluten-free bread if needed.
  • Leftover sandwiches can be reheated in the oven to retain crispness.
