Enjoy a homemade version of Pizza Hut’s iconic cheese sticks with this easy recipe. Soft, buttery dough topped with a blend of mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, seasoned with garlic and oregano, baked to golden perfection and served with tangy marinara sauce for dipping.

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 ½ tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • ¼ tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp warm water (110°F), divided
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, thinly sliced
  • 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten
  • ½ cup warm water (110°F), divided

Topping Ingredients

  • 8 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
  • ¼ tsp dried oregano
  • ¼ tsp garlic salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted, divided
  • Marinara sauce for dipping

Instructions

  1. Activate yeast: In a small bowl, combine the yeast with half of the warmed water (110°F) and set aside for 5 minutes until foamy, signaling the yeast is active.
  2. Prepare butter mixture: In a large bowl, place the thinly sliced butter, sugar, and salt. Pour the remaining warm water into this mixture and let it sit while the yeast activates to start softening the butter.
  3. Combine dough ingredients: After 5 minutes, whisk the butter mixture until somewhat combined. Add the egg yolk and the activated yeast mixture to the bowl, then stir in the flour until just incorporated to form a soft dough.
  4. Prepare baking dish: Brush a 9×13 inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of the melted butter to prevent sticking.
  5. Spread the dough: Spread the dough evenly in the prepared dish. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rest for 15 minutes to allow slight fermentation and rise.
  6. Preheat oven: While the dough rests, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Top the dough: Remove the plastic wrap. Brush the top of the dough with the remaining melted butter, then generously sprinkle the mozzarella, Parmesan, garlic salt, and dried oregano evenly over the surface.
  8. Bake: Bake the cheese sticks for 28-31 minutes, until the edges turn a deep golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted.
  9. Cool and cut: Let the breadsticks cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then cut into 8 even pieces.
  10. Serve: Serve the warm cheese sticks with marinara sauce for dipping, enjoying the gooey cheesy goodness.

Notes

  • Ensure the water is exactly around 110°F to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
  • You can substitute mozzarella with a blend of mozzarella and provolone for a different cheesy flavor.
  • Brush the baking dish thoroughly with butter for easier removal and enhanced flavor.
  • For extra crispiness, broil for 1-2 minutes at the end, but watch closely to avoid burning.
  • Leftover breadsticks can be reheated in the oven or air fryer for best texture retention.
  • If you prefer less salt, reduce the garlic salt or omit it and add fresh garlic for flavor.
