Oven-Baked Potato Fries are a simple, kid-friendly recipe perfect for introducing children to cooking. These crispy, flavorful fries are seasoned with thyme, black pepper, and optionally topped with cheddar cheese for added richness. Baked to perfection at a high temperature, they’re a healthier alternative to traditional fried fries and make a delicious side or snack.

Ingredients

Potato Fries

  • 2 pounds baking potatoes, each cut into six wedges
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Optional Topping

  • ¼ cup shredded Cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Gather all ingredients. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C) to ensure a hot environment for roasting the fries.
  2. Season Potato Wedges: Arrange the potato wedges on a baking sheet. Drizzle them with olive oil, then sprinkle with dried thyme, ground black pepper, and salt to taste. Toss the wedges with a spatula to coat them evenly with the oil and seasonings.
  3. Roast the Fries: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and roast the potato wedges for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, carefully flip the wedges to ensure even cooking and continue roasting for an additional 15 minutes or until they are soft inside and crispy outside.
  4. Add Cheese and Serve: Transfer the cooked wedges to a serving platter. Immediately sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over them while they’re hot so it melts slightly. Serve warm and enjoy.

Notes

  • You can substitute vegetable oil for olive oil if preferred.
  • For a sweet potato variation, use sweet potatoes and season them with ground cinnamon instead of thyme, pepper, and cheese.
  • Ensure to cut potatoes uniformly to promote even cooking.
  • For extra crispiness, soak the potato wedges in cold water for 30 minutes before baking and pat dry thoroughly.
