Crispy and golden homemade fried onion rings made with a simple three-step coating of flour, egg wash, and panko breadcrumbs. These onion rings are fried to perfection with a crunchy exterior and tender onion inside, perfect as a snack or side dish.

Ingredients

Onion Rings

  • 1 Onion, sliced into ½-inch thick slices and separated into rings

Breading

  • ½ cup Flour
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • ½ cup Milk
  • 1 cup Panko Bread Crumbs

For Frying

  • Vegetable Oil, about 2 inches deep

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onion rings: Slice 1 onion into ½-inch thick slices and carefully separate each slice into individual rings. This will ensure each ring is coated and fried evenly.
  2. Prepare the coating bowls: Place ½ cup flour in one bowl. In a second bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs and ½ cup milk until fully combined to create the egg wash. Place 1 cup panko bread crumbs in a third bowl.
  3. Coat the onion rings: Dip each onion ring first into the flour, making sure it’s fully coated. Then dip it into the egg wash mixture. Finally, dredge the onion ring in panko bread crumbs until it is well coated. Place the coated onion rings on a plate and repeat until all rings are coated.
  4. Heat the oil: Pour vegetable oil into a small saucepan until about 2 inches deep. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy if possible.
  5. Fry the onion rings: Carefully place the coated onion rings in the hot oil. Fry them for 2-3 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain excess oil: Remove the fried onion rings with a slotted spoon and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Allow them to cool slightly as they will be hot.
  7. Season and serve: Sprinkle the onion rings with salt while still hot to maintain crispiness. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature (375°F) to get crispy onion rings without absorbing too much oil.
  • Use panko breadcrumbs for extra crunchiness compared to regular breadcrumbs.
  • You can substitute the milk with a non-dairy alternative if desired.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture; onion rings tend to lose crispiness over time.
  • Be careful when frying and avoid overcrowding the pan to maintain oil temperature and even cooking.
