This classic Green Bean Casserole is a comforting and easy-to-make side dish featuring tender green beans baked in a creamy mushroom sauce, topped with crispy fried onions for a delightful crunch. Perfect for holiday dinners or family gatherings.

Ingredients

Green Bean Mixture

  • 4 cups frozen cut green beans (see notes for canned or fresh beans)
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon seasoned salt (more to taste)

Topping

  • 1½ cups crispy fried onions (divided)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F to ensure it reaches the perfect temperature by the time your casserole is prepped.
  2. Cook the green beans: Bring a medium pot of salted water to a boil. Add the frozen green beans and boil for 2 to 3 minutes until they are tender crisp but still firm.
  3. Mix the ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the cooked green beans with the condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, seasoned salt, and 1 cup of the crispy fried onions. Stir well to evenly coat the beans with the sauce.
  4. Transfer and bake: Pour the mixture into a 2-quart baking dish, spreading it evenly. Bake uncovered for 30 to 35 minutes or until the casserole is bubbly around the edges.
  5. Add topping and finish baking: Remove the casserole from the oven and gently stir. Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of crispy fried onions on top, then return the dish to the oven for 10 more minutes or until the onions are golden brown and crisp.

Notes

  • For canned or fresh green beans, adjust cooking time accordingly—fresh green beans may require boiling for 4 to 5 minutes until tender crisp.
  • Add ½ to 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese to the mix for a richer flavor if desired.
  • Seasoned salt can be adjusted or omitted based on dietary preferences.
  • This casserole can be assembled up to a day ahead and refrigerated before baking.
