These Flower Jam Thumbprint Cookies are a delightful spring treat featuring soft sugar cookies decorated with your child’s thumbprints to create charming flower petals filled with your favorite jam. Perfect for family baking and adding a personal touch to homemade cookies.

Ingredients

Cookie Dough

  • 2 ⅔ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, softened
  • ⅔ cup sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt

Filling

  • Jam (about 1 teaspoon per cookie, flavor of choice)

Instructions

  1. Cream Butter and Sugar: Using a stand or hand mixer, cream the softened butter and sugar on medium-high speed for 5-6 minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  2. Add Egg and Almond Extract: Mix in the large egg and almond extract on medium speed for about one minute until fully incorporated.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: Whisk together the all-purpose flour and kosher salt. Then add this flour mixture to the butter-egg mixture on low speed until a dough forms.
  4. Form Cookie Balls: Roll the dough into 1-ounce balls, ensuring they are evenly sized for uniform baking.
  5. Prepare Cookie Sheet: Place the dough balls about 2 inches apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet and gently flatten each with the bottom of a glass.
  6. Create Flower Petals: Use your child’s thumbprints or fingerprints to make small petal-shaped indents around the dough circles, forming a flower design.
  7. Add Jam Fillings: Spoon about one teaspoon of your chosen jam into the center indent of each cookie. Be careful not to overfill. Add a small dot of dough in the center of the jam to complete the flower look.
  8. Chill Dough: Refrigerate the prepared cookie sheet for 15-20 minutes to firm up the dough and jam before baking.
  9. Bake Cookies: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the cookies for about 15 minutes or until the edges turn slightly golden brown.
  10. Cool Cookies: Remove from the oven and allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use room temperature egg to ensure proper mixing and smooth dough.
  • Do not overfill the jam to prevent cookies from spreading or leaking jam during baking.
  • Chilling the dough before baking helps maintain cookie shape.
  • Feel free to experiment with different jam flavors like raspberry, strawberry, or apricot for variety.
  • The almond extract adds a subtle nutty flavor, but it can be omitted or replaced with vanilla extract if preferred.
