These Easy Homemade Dinner Rolls are soft, fluffy, and buttery, perfect for any meal. Made with simple ingredients and a straightforward process, these rolls require just a little patience for rising and yield a dozen delicious rolls ideal for family dinners or special occasions.

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 envelope active dried yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1/2 cup warm water (about room temperature warm)
  • 1 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt

For Egg Wash and Finishing

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Melted butter (to brush on hot rolls)

Instructions

  1. Activate yeast and combine liquids: Whisk the active dried yeast into the warm water in a small bowl and set aside until bubbles appear on the surface, indicating the yeast is active. Meanwhile, whisk together the milk, melted butter, and sugar in a larger bowl. Add the activated yeast mixture to this and whisk until combined.
  2. Make dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the hook attachment, combine the flour and salt. Pour in the milk and yeast mixture, then knead on medium-low speed for 5-6 minutes until the dough forms a smooth ball. If the dough feels too sticky, gradually add an extra tablespoon of flour.
  3. First rise: Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough stand at room temperature for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  4. Shape rolls: Punch down the risen dough to remove excess air. Divide it into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a smooth ball. Place the dough balls into a greased 9×11 inch baking pan, spaced evenly.
  5. Second rise: Cover the baking pan and let the rolls rise at room temperature for 20-30 minutes until they have puffed up significantly.
  6. Prepare for baking: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Beat the egg and lightly brush the tops of the rolls with the egg wash, being careful not to use too much to avoid scrambled spots on the surface.
  7. Bake: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
  8. Finish and serve: Immediately after removing them from the oven, brush the hot rolls with melted butter for extra richness and shine. Remove the rolls from the pan and serve warm.

Notes

  • Water temperature should be warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • You do not have to use the entire beaten egg for the wash; use a light hand to achieve a glossy finish without overcooking on top.
  • If the dough feels sticky during kneading, add flour one tablespoon at a time to reach the proper consistency.
  • These rolls freeze well; store cooled rolls in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months.
  • For a richer flavor, use whole milk and real butter instead of substitutes.
