These Easy Football Pizza Pinwheels are a fun and tasty appetizer perfect for game day or any casual gathering. Made with refrigerated pizza dough spread with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, and mini pepperoni, they’re rolled, cut, shaped into a football with foil, and baked to golden perfection. The mini pepperoni pieces form football stitches, adding a playful and festive touch to this crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Pizza Dough and Sauce

  • 13.8 oz original refrigerated pizza dough
  • 2/3 cup marinara sauce
  • Salt, to taste

Cheese and Toppings

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Mini pepperoni pieces for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C) to ensure it is hot and ready for baking the pinwheels.
  2. Prepare Dough: Roll out the pizza dough into an even rectangle. Stretch it gently but avoid thinning it too much to prevent tearing.
  3. Spread Sauce and Salt: Evenly spread the marinara sauce over the dough, leaving about 1/2 inch border on the top long side to help seal the roll. Sprinkle salt over the sauce to enhance flavors.
  4. Add Cheese and Roll: Distribute the shredded mozzarella on top of the sauce. Then, tightly roll the dough from the long side towards the border without sauce to form a log.
  5. Slice Pinwheels: Cut the rolled dough into 7-8 evenly sized pieces.
  6. Prepare Foil Football Shape: Cut two large rectangles of aluminum foil, grease them, and layer one on top of the other. Arrange the pinwheel slices in the center in a football shape. Fold up the edges of the foil to form around the pinwheels, leaving a small gap for expansion. Transfer the foil form carefully into a large rectangular baking dish using a spatula.
  7. Add Pepperoni Stitches: Place mini pepperoni pieces on top of the pinwheels in a pattern resembling football stitches for decoration.
  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the pinwheels are golden brown and cooked through.

Notes

  • Do not overstretch the dough to avoid tearing and ensure a good rise.
  • Leave a small border without sauce to allow proper sealing of the rolled dough.
  • Using two layers of foil helps maintain the football shape and prevent leaks during baking.
  • If mini pepperoni is unavailable, finely chopped regular pepperoni can be used as a substitute.
  • Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
