This easy flapjack recipe yields deliciously chewy oat bars, perfect for a quick snack or a sweet treat. Made with butter, golden syrup, brown sugar, and oats, these flapjacks are baked to golden perfection and finished with a drizzle of melted milk chocolate for an irresistible finish.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 225 g Butter
  • 150 g Golden Syrup (See notes for substitutes)
  • 150 g Soft light brown sugar
  • 450 g Oats (See notes)
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 100 g Milk chocolate (Melted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 170℃ fan, 190℃ conventional, or Gas Mark 5 (340°F) to ensure it is at the right temperature for baking the flapjacks evenly.
  2. Prepare the baking tray: Line a 20×20 cm baking tray with baking parchment to prevent the flapjacks from sticking and to allow easy removal after baking.
  3. Melt the wet ingredients: In a large pan over low heat, melt the butter, golden syrup, and soft light brown sugar together. Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves completely. Then remove from the heat to prevent burning.
  4. Combine with dry ingredients: Stir the oats and salt into the melted mixture. Mix thoroughly to coat all oats evenly with the buttery syrup mixture.
  5. Press into the tray: Pour the mixture into the prepared baking tin and press it down firmly with the back of a spoon to create an even layer.
  6. Bake the flapjacks: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until the edges are golden brown but the center remains soft and slightly wobbly, ensuring chewy texture.
  7. Cool and slice: Once baked, allow the flapjack to cool completely in the tin. Then remove it from the tin and cut into 16 equal squares using a sharp knife for clean edges.
  8. Add the chocolate drizzle: Drizzle the melted milk chocolate over the flapjacks and let it set completely before serving to add a rich, sweet finish.

Notes

  • Golden syrup can be substituted with honey or maple syrup, but this may alter the flavor slightly.
  • Use rolled oats for the best texture; quick oats can make flapjacks softer and less chewy.
  • Store flapjacks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
  • For a gluten-free option, ensure you use certified gluten-free oats.
