This easy blueberry jam recipe offers a simple and quick way to make homemade jam using fresh blueberries and granulated sugar. With minimal ingredients and straightforward steps, it results in a thick, flavorful jam perfect for spreading on toast or adding to desserts.

Ingredients

Jam Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the plate: Place a small plate in the freezer to chill. This will be used later to test if the jam has thickened properly.
  2. Combine ingredients: In a medium saucepan, add 2 1/4 cups of fresh blueberries and 1/2 cup granulated sugar. Set the saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Mash the blueberries: Use the back of a wooden spoon or a potato masher to gently mash the blueberries. This helps release the juices and promotes even cooking. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  4. Cook the jam: Let the mixture cook on medium heat for 18 to 20 minutes. Stir occasionally until the mixture becomes thick and syrupy. After about 18 minutes, remove the chilled plate from the freezer and place a small spoonful of jam onto it.
  5. Test for doneness: Let the jam sit on the plate for about one minute. If the edges of the jam set and do not run, the jam is ready. If not, continue cooking and test again every few minutes.
  6. Cool and store: Remove the saucepan from heat and transfer the jam into a clean container. Allow it to cool, then place in the refrigerator to fully set before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh, ripe blueberries for the best flavor and texture.
  • Make sure to stir occasionally to prevent the jam from burning on the bottom of the pan.
  • If you prefer a smoother jam, you can mash the blueberries more thoroughly or pulse lightly with a blender before cooking.
  • Jam will thicken more once refrigerated, so do not overcook it.
  • Store the jam in the refrigerator and consume within two weeks for optimal freshness.
