Delightful and fun dot cakes that are perfect for parties and gatherings. These mini cakes are made from any favorite cake mix, baked in a pan, then transformed into cute, individual cake dots topped with frosting and sprinkles for a colorful and festive treat.

Ingredients

Basic Ingredients

  • Non-stick spray, for greasing
  • 1 box cake mix (any flavor)
  • Water, eggs, and oil as called for on the cake mix box

Topping

  • Frosting (any flavor), for decorating
  • Sprinkles, for garnish

Tools

  • Butter knife or icing spatula
  • Mason jar (for shaping the dots)
  • Baking dish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350℉ (175℃) or follow the temperature suggested on your cake mix box to ensure optimal baking.
  2. Prepare baking dish: Spray your baking dish thoroughly with non-stick spray to prevent the cake from sticking after baking.
  3. Mix the cake batter: In a mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, water, eggs, and oil following the instructions on the cake mix package. Stir until the batter is smooth and well blended.
  4. Add sprinkles (optional): Fold sprinkles into the batter if you want a festive look inside your dot cakes.
  5. Pour batter into dish: Transfer the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  6. Bake the cake: Place the dish in the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or according to the box directions, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Cool the cake: Remove the cake from oven and allow it to cool completely for 20 to 30 minutes so it’s easy to handle.
  8. Form cake dots: Press the rim of a mason jar straight down into the cake surface firmly to create a round shape.
  9. Remove shapes: Carefully lift the jar up and out of the cake. Gently press the cake inside the jar down to the bottom to complete the dot cake shape.
  10. Add frosting: Spoon a generous scoop of frosting on top of each cake dot.
  11. Smooth frosting: Use a butter knife or icing spatula to flatten and even out the frosting so it is level with the top edge of the jar shape.
  12. Decorate with sprinkles: Press sprinkles onto the frosting to decorate and add texture, then serve and enjoy your dot cakes!

Notes

  • You can customize the cake flavor and frosting according to your preference to match the occasion.
  • Ensure the cake is fully cooled before cutting or shaping to prevent crumbling.
  • Use a mason jar with a smooth rim for clean circle shapes in the cake.
  • Store leftover dot cakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator to keep fresh.
  • If desired, swap sprinkles with chopped nuts or chocolate chips for variation.
