These Cheesy Breadsticks made from pizza dough are a crispy, golden-brown snack or side dish perfect for sharing. With a buttery garlic and Italian seasoning spread topped generously with melted mozzarella, they’re simple to prepare and perfect served with marinara or pizza sauce for dipping.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 lb store-bought or homemade pizza dough

Topping

  • 2 Tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder or 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning blend or dried basil
  • 1 and 3/4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Optional

  • Sprinkle of cornmeal for dusting the pan
  • Marinara or pizza sauce for dipping

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: Punch down the risen pizza dough to release air bubbles, then divide it in half. Use one half to make the breadsticks while saving the other half for another pizza or freezing.
  2. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 425°F (218°C) to get it ready for baking the breadsticks.
  3. Shape the dough: On a lightly floured surface, parchment paper, or silicone mat dusted with cornmeal, roll out the dough into a 9×13-inch rectangle, making it as thin and rectangular as possible.
  4. Prepare the topping: Mix melted butter, garlic powder or minced garlic, and Italian seasoning in a small bowl. Brush the mixture evenly over the shaped dough. Then, cover the top uniformly with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  5. Bake the breadsticks: Place the prepared dough in the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown. Optionally, broil for the last minute to achieve a beautifully browned top.
  6. Serve: Slice baked breadsticks into sticks and serve warm, either plain or with marinara or pizza sauce for dipping. Store any leftovers tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for up to three months.

Notes

  • Use the other half of the dough for pizza or freeze it for future use.
  • Dusting the pan with cornmeal helps prevent sticking and adds texture but is optional.
  • Broiling the breadsticks briefly at the end adds a nice golden top, but watch carefully to avoid burning.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat before serving.
  • Breadsticks can be frozen for up to 3 months.
