These Cheesy Breadsticks are made from easy-to-use pizza dough, topped with melted mozzarella cheese and garlic butter, then baked to golden perfection. Perfect as a snack, appetizer, or side dish, they are delightfully cheesy with a crispy edge and soft, fluffy center, best served warm with marinara or pizza sauce for dipping.

Ingredients

Pizza Dough

  • 1 lb store-bought or homemade pizza dough

Topping

  • 2 Tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder or 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning blend or dried basil
  • 1 and 3/4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Optional

  • Sprinkle of cornmeal for dusting the pan
  • Marinara or pizza sauce for dipping

Instructions

  1. Prepare Dough: Punch down the risen pizza dough to release any air bubbles and divide it in half. You can use the other half to make a pizza or freeze it following your dough recipe instructions.
  2. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 425°F (218°C) to get it ready for baking the breadsticks.
  3. Shape Dough: On a lightly floured surface, or parchment paper/silicone mat sprinkled with optional cornmeal, roll out the dough into a roughly 9×13-inch rectangle, shaping it as thin and even as possible.
  4. Add Toppings: Mix melted butter, garlic powder or minced garlic, and Italian seasoning until combined. Brush this mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough, then sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the top.
  5. Bake: Bake the breadsticks in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes until edges turn golden brown. For an extra golden top, broil for 1 additional minute, watching carefully to avoid burning.
  6. Serve: Slice into breadsticks and serve warm, plain or with marinara/pizza sauce for dipping. Store leftovers tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months.

Notes

  • You can use store-bought or homemade pizza dough depending on your preference and convenience.
  • Replacing garlic powder with fresh minced garlic provides a stronger, fresher garlic flavor.
  • If desired, dusting the baking surface with cornmeal prevents sticking and adds a slight crunch to the crust.
  • Baking time may vary depending on your oven, so watch for a golden-brown crust as your indicator.
  • Broiling at the end is optional but gives the cheese and edges a more appealing golden color and slight crispiness.
  • Leftover breadsticks taste best reheated in the oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
  • Freezing baked breadsticks extends storage up to 3 months; reheat directly from frozen for best texture.
