These Best Matcha Crinkle Cookies are a vibrant twist on classic crinkle cookies, bursting with earthy green tea flavor. Made without any chilling time, they come together quickly and bake into soft, chewy delights with a beautiful crackled sugar coating.

Ingredients

Cookie Dough

  • 1/2 cup softened, unsalted butter (114g)
  • 1 cup sugar (200g)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups flour (260g)
  • 2 tbsp matcha powder

Coating

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (50g)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugars: In a mixing bowl, cream the softened butter with the sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until the mixture is light and fluffy, incorporating air for a tender cookie.
  3. Add Eggs: Beat in the eggs one at a time until the batter becomes smooth and homogenous, which helps bind the ingredients together.
  4. Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Sift the matcha powder into the flour to avoid clumps, then gradually add this mixture into the wet ingredients, mixing slowly until just combined, forming the cookie dough.
  5. Form Dough Balls: Use a cookie scoop to portion out 1.5 tablespoon-sized balls of dough for uniform cookie size and even baking.
  6. Coat the Dough Balls: Roll each dough ball first in granulated sugar then in powdered sugar to create the signature crinkle effect and add a sweet outer layer.
  7. Bake the Cookies: Arrange the coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheet with space between each, then bake in the preheated oven for 11 minutes until the cookies are set but still soft in the center.

Notes

  • Use high-quality matcha powder for the best flavor and vibrant green color.
  • Do not chill the dough; these cookies bake perfectly without that step, saving time.
  • Baking time may vary slightly depending on your oven; watch for the crackled surface as an indicator of doneness.
  • Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
