This classic Beef Gravy recipe creates a rich, flavorful sauce that perfectly complements roast beef, mashed potatoes, or any of your favorite side dishes. Made with simple ingredients including butter, flour, and savory beef broth, enhanced with fresh rosemary and black pepper, this easy stovetop gravy brings comforting warmth and depth to your meals in just 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Beef Gravy Ingredients

  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 3 cups beef broth (from pot roast drippings, premade broth, or a combination)
  • 1 tsp chopped rosemary
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Melt Butter and Make Roux: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour and whisk constantly for 1-2 minutes until the mixture is smooth and turns a light golden color, forming a roux which will thicken the gravy.
  2. Add Beef Broth Slowly: Gradually pour in the warm beef broth while continuously whisking to prevent lumps from forming in the gravy.
  3. Simmer and Thicken: Continue cooking the mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens to your preferred consistency. If it becomes too thick, whisk in a small amount of water to loosen it.
  4. Season the Gravy: Stir in the chopped rosemary, black pepper, and salt, mixing well to combine all flavors evenly throughout the gravy.
  5. Serve Warm: Remove from heat and serve the gravy warm over your beef, mashed potatoes, or other side dishes to enhance their flavor.

Notes

  • For a smoother texture, strain the gravy through a fine sieve before serving.
  • If you don’t have fresh rosemary, dried rosemary can be used but reduce quantity to 1/2 teaspoon.
  • Adjust salt according to your broth’s saltiness to avoid oversalting.
  • Use warm broth when adding to the roux to prevent clumping and ensure smoothness.
  • Leftover gravy can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stove.
