These Baked Italian Subs are a delicious and easy-to-make sandwich featuring hoagie rolls layered with pepperoni, turkey, provolone cheese, fresh vegetables, and Italian seasonings, then baked to melty perfection.

Ingredients

Sandwich Ingredients

  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 1/3 cup Italian dressing
  • 12 slices sandwich-sized pepperoni
  • 12 ounces turkey (45 slices per sub)
  • 12 slices provolone cheese (3 slices per sub)
  • ½ red onion, sliced
  • ½ cup sweet and hot salad peppers
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon oregano

Butter Mixture

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon garlic salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Get out a 9×13 inch baking dish and preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the subs.
  2. Prepare Rolls: Slice each hoagie roll lengthwise but do not cut all the way through, leaving them hinged. Brush Italian dressing on the inside of both the bottom and top buns to add moisture and flavor. Place three slices of pepperoni evenly on the bottom bun.
  3. Add Turkey and Cheese: Fold the turkey slices twice and layer them on top of the pepperoni—about 4 to 5 slices per sub. Next, fold the provolone cheese once and place it over the turkey, using three slices for each sub.
  4. Add Vegetables and Seasonings: Layer sliced red onions and sweet and hot salad peppers over the cheese. Evenly sprinkle pepper, salt, and oregano on top. Partially close the buns to keep the fillings in place.
  5. Prepare Garlic Butter: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine butter and garlic salt. Microwave until the butter melts completely, then brush this garlic butter mixture generously on the top bun to add rich flavor.
  6. Bake the Subs: Place the prepared subs into the baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until the cheese melts and the subs are heated through.

Notes

  • You can substitute turkey with ham or salami if preferred.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, adding more oregano or pepper if desired.
  • For a spicier kick, add extra hot peppers or a dash of red pepper flakes.
  • To make sandwich crispier, broil for 1-2 minutes at the end of baking but watch carefully to avoid burning.
  • Serve warm with a side of chips or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
