These Apple Dumplings are a delightful dessert featuring tender apple slices wrapped in buttery crescent roll dough, baked in a sweet, cinnamon-infused brown sugar sauce with a splash of lemon-lime soda for extra moisture and flavor. Perfectly golden and bubbling with a rich sauce, they make an easy, crowd-pleasing treat served warm, especially with a scoop of ice cream.

Ingredients

Dumplings

  • 2 (8-ounce) cans crescent rolls
  • 2 apples (Golden Delicious or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and cut into 8 slices each

Sauce

  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 cups lemon-lime soda (7Up, Sprite, or similar)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter a 13 x 9 inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Apples: Peel and core the apples, then carefully cut each apple into 8 evenly-sized slices to ensure uniform cooking.
  3. Assemble Dumplings: Separate the crescent roll dough into individual triangles. Wrap each apple slice tightly with one dough triangle and place the wrapped dumplings evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Make Sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Cook the mixture just until combined and slightly thickened, then remove from heat.
  5. Add Sauce to Dumplings: Pour the warm sauce evenly over the dumplings in the baking dish, covering them well.
  6. Add Soda: Pour the lemon-lime soda gently through the middle and around the edges of the baking dish, careful to avoid pouring directly over the wrapped dough to keep the texture intact.
  7. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the dumplings turn golden brown and the sauce is bubbling vigorously.
  8. Serve: Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to complement the sweet, saucy dumplings.

Notes

  • Choose tart apple varieties like Granny Smith for a nice contrast to the sweet sauce.
  • Be careful not to pour soda directly on the dough to prevent it from getting soggy.
  • You can substitute 7Up or Sprite with any lemon-lime soda or a similar carbonated beverage.
  • Serve warm for best flavor and texture, especially with ice cream or whipped cream.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated before serving.
