Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup (120g) all purpose flour
  • 3 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 6 Tbsp milk (skim milk recommended)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (or other flavor extract)
  • 3 Tbsp vegetable or canola oil

Decoration

  • 1 bag Wilton red candy melts
  • 1 bag Wilton white candy melts
  • 1 bag Wilton blue candy melts

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Spray a donut pan with cooking spray and spread it lightly with a paper towel to remove excess, ensuring even non-stick coverage.
  2. Mix Dry and Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, combine the milk, egg, vanilla extract, and oil. Stir the dry mixture into the wet ingredients until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  3. Fill Donut Pan: Transfer the batter into a large piping bag or a ziplock bag with a corner cut off. Pipe the batter evenly into the donut pan, filling each cavity about two-thirds full. Tap the pan gently on the counter to release air bubbles for smooth donuts.
  4. Bake Donuts: Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the donuts comes out clean. Let the donuts rest in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. Melt White Candy Melts: Melt approximately one-third of the white candy melts using a microwave or stovetop method. Microwave in intervals at 60% power for one minute, stirring between each until smooth. Allow to cool for 5 minutes to avoid runniness.
  6. Dip Donuts in White Coating: Pour the melted white candy melts into a shallow bowl. Dip each cooled donut into the white coating, allowing excess to drip off. Place the donuts on a cooling rack and let the coating harden.
  7. Melt and Apply Blue Candy Melts: Melt about one-third to one-quarter of the blue candy melts, following the same melting and cooling process. Transfer melted blue candy into a squeeze bottle and draw the blue corners on the donuts. Use a toothpick to spread the blue coating evenly.
  8. Melt and Add Red Candy Melts: Similarly, melt one-third to one-quarter of the red candy melts, cool slightly, then transfer to a squeeze bottle. Draw red stripes across the donuts over the white base to mimic flag stripes.
  9. Add White Polka Dots: Once the blue corner is semi-set, use a small squeeze bottle filled with melted white candy melts to dot small white polka dots onto the blue areas. Allow all candy melts to harden completely.
  10. Store Donuts: Once decorated and fully hardened, store the American Flag Donuts in an airtight container to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • Ensure the donuts are completely cool before dipping to prevent melting of the candy melts.
  • Use a toothpick to help spread candy melts for more precise decorating.
  • If candy melts are too thick, add a small amount of vegetable oil or shortening to thin them while melting.
  • Donuts are best consumed within 2-3 days for optimal freshness.
  • Adjust oven temperature and baking time slightly based on your equipment, as donuts should come out moist but fully cooked.
