These 1-Hour Soft and Buttery Dinner Rolls are fluffy, tender, and perfect for any meal. Made with simple ingredients including milk, honey, and melted butter, these rolls come together quickly thanks to a short rise time and bake into golden, buttery perfection. Perfect for family dinners or special occasions, these rolls are easily made using a stand mixer and bake in a single dish for convenience.

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter, plus extra for brushing
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 3 ½ to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set it aside for later use.
  2. Heat Liquids: In a microwave-safe bowl or saucepan, combine the water, melted butter, milk, and honey. Warm the mixture gently until it reaches about 110°F, which feels warm but not hot. Use short 15-second microwave intervals or heat slowly on the stove, stirring occasionally to distribute heat evenly.
  3. Activate Yeast: Pour the warm liquid mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer. Sprinkle the active dry yeast evenly on top and stir lightly with a fork. Allow the yeast to activate for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is alive and ready.
  4. Add Dry Ingredients: Add 3 ½ cups of all-purpose flour and the sea salt to the yeast mixture.
  5. Mix and Knead Dough: Attach the dough hook to your stand mixer and mix on medium-low speed until well combined. If the dough sticks to the sides of the bowl, gradually add more flour, ¼ cup at a time, up to 4 cups total, until dough pulls away from the sides and feels slightly sticky. Continue kneading for 4-5 minutes until the dough is smooth. Then, shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl.
  6. First Rise: Cover the bowl with a damp towel or paper towel and let the dough rise in a warm spot for 15 minutes.
  7. Shape Rolls: Gently punch down the dough to release air bubbles. Divide the dough into 15 equal pieces and shape each into a smooth ball. Arrange the dough balls evenly in the prepared baking dish. Cover again and allow the rolls to rise for an additional 15 to 20 minutes.
  8. Bake: Remove the cover and place the baking dish into the preheated oven. Bake the rolls for 15 minutes, or until they turn lightly golden on top and are fully cooked inside.
  9. Brush with Butter: Once baked, transfer the baking dish to a wire rack. Brush the warm rolls generously with melted butter for a soft, flavorful finish.
  10. Serve: Serve the rolls warm for the best taste and texture. Enjoy them fresh as a side or for sandwiches.

Notes

  • Make sure the liquids are warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Use a stand mixer with a dough hook for the best kneading results, but kneading by hand is possible.
  • Adding extra melted butter on top after baking ensures a rich, soft crust.
  • These rolls are best eaten the same day but can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days.
  • To reheat, warm in the oven wrapped in foil for about 5 minutes.
