This easy make-ahead Jalapeño Popper Cheese Football is a creamy, cheesy appetizer perfect for Game Day celebrations. Shaped like a football and decorated with sour cream laces, this crowd-pleaser combines cream cheese, cheddar, jalapeño, and green onions, coated with crushed Wheat Thin crackers for a crunchy exterior. Serve chilled with extra Wheat Thin crackers for a fun and tasty snack.

Ingredients

Cheese Ball:

  • 2 (8 oz) packages cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (7 oz) bag shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped jalapeño pepper
  • 3/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 green onions, chopped (divided)

Coating & Garnish:

  • 15 Wheat Thin crackers, crushed finely
  • 2 tsp light sour cream (for garnish)
  • Extra Wheat Thin crackers (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Mix the Cheese Base: In a medium bowl, beat together softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, finely chopped jalapeño pepper, garlic powder, and 3 tablespoons of chopped green onions using an electric mixer until well blended and smooth.
  2. Shape the Cheese Ball: Transfer the cheese mixture to a serving platter and shape it into an oval to resemble a football.
  3. Prepare the Coating: Crush 15 Wheat Thin crackers finely and mix the crumbs with the remaining chopped green onions. Press this crumb mixture evenly onto the surface of the cheese ball, coating it fully.
  4. Chill the Cheese Football: Refrigerate the cheese ball for at least 30 minutes to set, or up to 24 hours. If chilling overnight, cover tightly with plastic wrap to prevent drying.
  5. Add the Sour Cream Laces: Just before serving, fill a small resealable plastic bag with light sour cream. Cut a tiny tip off one corner of the bag and pipe sour cream lines onto the cheese ball to mimic football laces.
  6. Serve: Present the cheese football with extra Wheat Thin crackers for dipping and enjoying.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add more jalapeños or use jalapeños with seeds.
  • Make ahead and chill up to 24 hours to let flavors meld perfectly.
  • Use light sour cream for a lower-fat garnish option.
  • Can be served with various crackers or sliced vegetables for dipping.
