This easy blueberry jam recipe creates a deliciously sweet and tangy preserve using fresh or frozen blueberries, sugar, and lemon. Perfect as a spread for toast, a topping for desserts, or a homemade gift, this jam is made on the stovetop with minimal ingredients and a quick cooking time.

Ingredients

Jam Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, stir together the blueberries, granulated sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt over medium heat. Stir frequently to prevent sticking.
  2. Bring to Boil: Continue stirring and bring the mixture to a rolling boil on medium heat, ensuring the sugar dissolves completely and the blueberries begin to break down.
  3. Simmer and Thicken: Reduce heat to medium. Simmer the mixture for 7 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally and gently crushing some of the blueberries with a spoon to release their juices. Cook until the jam slightly thickens and a digital thermometer reads 220°F (104°C).
  4. Cool the Jam: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the jam to cool for 5 minutes in the pan.
  5. Transfer and Store: Spoon the jam into sterilized jars, leaving them unopened until the jam reaches room temperature. Once cooled, seal the jars tightly and store them in the refrigerator. The jam may take 24 to 48 hours to fully set but can be enjoyed immediately.

Notes

  • Using fresh or frozen blueberries both work well and will yield similar results.
  • For a smoother jam texture, crush the blueberries more thoroughly during cooking.
  • Ensure jars are sterilized before storing to maximize shelf life.
  • The jam will thicken more as it cools.
  • Make sure to use a reliable digital thermometer to check the setting temperature of 220°F for perfect consistency.
