Ingredients

Beef Mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for optimal flavor)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped (plus extra for garnish)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Rice

  • 1 cup rice (jasmine, basmati, or brown rice), rinsed
  • 2 cups water

Optional Toppings and Vegetables

  • Sesame seeds
  • Sliced cucumber
  • Kimchi
  • Pickled vegetables
  • Vegetables such as bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, or spinach (steamed or sautéed)
  • Egg (fried, for added richness)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice: Rinse 1 cup of rice under cold water until the water runs clear. For stove method, combine rinsed rice with 2 cups of water in a pot, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 15 minutes until water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork. Alternatively, use a rice cooker or Instant Pot according to their specific instructions.
  2. Brown the Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks. Cook until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add Flavors: Drain excess fat from the skillet if desired. Add the minced garlic and ginger to the beef, cooking for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Season the Beef: Stir in the soy sauce, sesame oil, and chopped green onions. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let it simmer for a couple of minutes so the flavors meld together.
  5. Assemble the Bowl: Spoon a generous portion of cooked rice into each bowl. Top with the seasoned ground beef mixture. Add any cooked or fresh vegetables you like, such as steamed broccoli or sliced bell peppers.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Finish the bowls with a sprinkle of sesame seeds, additional chopped green onions, and any other preferred toppings like kimchi or a fried egg for extra richness. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for beef if preferred.
  • Adjust soy sauce quantity to taste, especially if using regular or low-sodium soy sauce.
  • Adding a fried or soft-boiled egg on top enriches the bowl and adds extra protein.
  • Use gluten-free tamari if you need a gluten-free version.
  • Vegetables are optional but highly recommended for added nutrients and texture.
  • Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat thoroughly before serving.
