Ingredients

Cake Ingredients

  • 4 Egg Whites
  • 1 Whole Egg
  • 2 and 3/4 Cups Cake Flour
  • 1 Cup Ultrafine Sugar
  • 1 Cup Whole Milk
  • 2/3 Cup Taro Root Powder
  • 12 Tablespoons Butter (softened)
  • 1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Vegetable Oil
  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients

  • 10 Tablespoons Butter (softened)
  • 16 oz Cream Cheese
  • 3 Cups Powdered Sugar
  • 4 Teaspoons Vanilla Extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Mix Dry Ingredients: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, combine all dry ingredients including cake flour, sugar, taro root powder, and baking powder. Add softened butter and mix until the mixture clumps when squeezed in your hand.
  2. Add Eggs and Oil: Gradually add egg whites one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then add the whole egg and vegetable oil, mixing until the batter is smooth.
  3. Incorporate Milk and Vanilla: In a small separate bowl, whisk together whole milk and vanilla extract. Then pour this mixture into the cake batter and blend well to create a smooth batter.
  4. Prepare Pans and Bake: Grease two 8 or 9-inch cake pans. Divide the batter evenly between them. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Make Cream Cheese Frosting: While the cake bakes, beat together cream cheese, softened butter, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and mix well. Chill frosting in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to firm up.
  6. Cool the Cakes: Remove cake pans from oven and gently shake side to side to loosen cakes. Allow them to cool in pans at room temperature for 15 minutes, then carefully invert them onto plates and let cool completely for another 45 minutes.
  7. Prepare Cake Layers: Trim the dome from the bottom cake layer to ensure a flat surface. Place this layer on a serving plate and lightly frost it.
  8. Stack and Frost Top Layer: Place the top cake layer (dome side up) on the bottom layer. Lightly frost the entire top layer as well.
  9. Create Frosting Roses: Fit a pastry bag with a large star tip (such as 1M). Begin in the center of where a rose is desired and pipe in a circular motion outward to form each rose. Cover the entire top surface with roses.
  10. Finish Cake Edge: Using the same star tip, pipe frosting in a continuous line around the base of the cake for a polished look.
  11. Serve: Serve immediately and enjoy this elegant and delicious taro cake with cream cheese frosting.

Notes

  • Ensure eggs are at room temperature for better mixing and rise.
  • You can substitute cake flour with all-purpose flour, but cake flour yields a lighter texture.
  • To soften butter quickly, leave it out at room temperature for 30 minutes or microwave briefly.
  • Adjust the amount of powdered sugar in frosting to your preferred sweetness and consistency.
  • Allow cakes to cool completely before frosting to prevent frosting from melting.
  • If you don’t have taro root powder, you may use fresh grated taro or a taro paste with adjusted moisture.
