These Steamed Rose Buns are light, fluffy, and visually stunning, shaped to resemble delicate roses. Made with boiled pumpkin puree for a hint of natural sweetness and color, this effortless recipe combines yeast-risen dough with steaming to create soft, aromatic buns perfect for teatime or any snack.

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • Boiled pumpkin, 70 g (1/3 cup)
  • Dry yeast, 3 g (1/2 tsp)
  • Sugar, 5 g (1 tsp)
  • Warm water, 50 ml (3 tbsp)
  • All-purpose flour, 190 g (1 1/2 cups)
  • Sugar, 30 g (2 tbsp)
  • Baking powder, 3 g (1/2 tsp)
  • Butter, 15 g (1 tbsp, melted)

Instructions

  1. Mash Pumpkin: Mash the boiled pumpkin thoroughly until a smooth puree is formed with no lumps, providing moisture and sweetness to the dough.
  2. Activate Yeast: Whisk the dry yeast with the warm water and set aside for 10 minutes or until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: Whisk together the all-purpose flour and baking powder in a mixing bowl to ensure even distribution.
  4. Combine Dough: Mix the foamy yeast mixture, pumpkin puree, 5 g sugar, and melted butter into the flour mixture. Stir and knead until a cohesive dough forms.
  5. First Rise: Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size, allowing the dough to ferment and develop flavor.
  6. Divide Dough: Punch down the risen dough and roll it into 15 equal balls. Set the balls aside to rest for 15 minutes to relax the gluten.
  7. Shape Layers: Roll each ball into a flat disk. Stack five disks on top of each other, slightly overlapping to create layered petals.
  8. Form Rose Roll: Roll the stack of disks tightly to form a cylindrical shape resembling a rosebud.
  9. Slice Roll: Cut the rolled dough in half lengthwise to create two rose shapes.
  10. Open Petals: Gently open and arrange the cut halves to resemble rose petals, enhancing the floral appearance.
  11. Second Rise: Place the shaped buns on parchment and set aside for 30 minutes to puff up before steaming.
  12. Steam Buns: Steam the buns in a steamer basket over boiling water for 12 minutes, until soft and fully cooked.
  13. Serve: Remove carefully and enjoy the light, aromatic steamed rose buns warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Make sure the water is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
  • You can substitute pumpkin with sweet potato or mashed carrot for a similar effect.
  • Ensure the steamer lid is covered with a cloth to prevent water droplets from falling onto the buns.
  • These buns are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated gently by steaming again.
  • Brush the buns lightly with melted butter after steaming for extra flavor and shine, if desired.
