Recreate the beloved Starbucks cake pops at home with this simple and delightful recipe. Moist vanilla cake mixed with sweet frosting, coated in luscious pink candy melts, and decorated with white sprinkles makes for an irresistible treat that’s perfect for parties or everyday indulgence.

Ingredients

Cake Ingredients

  • 1 box vanilla cake mix
  • Ingredients as per cake mix instructions (usually water, oil, and eggs)

Frosting

  • 1/3 cup French vanilla frosting

Coating and Decoration

  • 1 bag (12 oz) light pink candy melts
  • White sprinkles, for decoration

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake: Follow the package instructions for the vanilla cake mix by beating it together with water, oil, and eggs. Pour the batter into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish or two 8×8-inch round cake pans. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, usually around 25-35 minutes.
  2. Cool and Crumble: Allow the cake to cool completely. Once cooled, crumble the cake with a fork into a large bowl or the baking dish itself. Stir in 1/3 cup of French vanilla frosting until fully combined. Cover and freeze the mixture until chilled and firm.
  3. Form Cake Balls: Using your hands, roll the chilled cake and frosting mixture into evenly sized balls, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Freeze the balls again until they are firm for easier handling and smoother shape. After freezing, you may reroll them gently to smooth out any imperfections, then place the balls on a baking sheet.
  4. Prepare the Lollipop Sticks: Melt the pink candy melts using a microwave or double boiler. Dip the tip of each lollipop stick into the melted candy and insert it about halfway into each cake ball. Place the cake pops back into the freezer until the coating hardens, ensuring sticks stay securely in place.
  5. Coat and Decorate: Dip each cake pop fully into the melted candy melts or spoon melted candy over them while twirling to coat evenly. Before the coating sets, decorate with white sprinkles. Place the cake pops upright in a styrofoam block or inside a box to allow the coating to harden completely. Serve once firm and enjoy your homemade Starbucks-style cake pops!

Notes

  • Freezing the cake mixture and formed balls is essential for shaping and coating success.
  • Use a styrofoam block or an egg carton to hold cake pops upright as they dry.
  • For variation, try different colored candy melts and sprinkles.
  • Store cake pops in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Make sure the cake is well cooled before crumbling to avoid clumps.
