Warm, spiced apple cider made two ways in a slow cooker: one using store-bought cider and the other entirely from fresh apples and spices, perfect for cozy gatherings and chilly evenings.

Ingredients

Store-Bought Apple Cider Version:

8 cups (2 quarts) apple cider

1/3 cup light brown sugar, packed

2 whole cinnamon sticks

1 teaspoon whole cloves

1 teaspoon whole allspice

1 large orange, sliced

Homemade Apple Cider Version:

10 medium apples (mix of Gala, Fuji, Granny Smith)

1 large orange, quartered

1 tablespoon whole cloves

1 tablespoon whole allspice

34 cinnamon sticks

1/4 cup brown sugar (or to taste)

Water (enough to cover fruit in slow cooker)

Instructions

  1. Store-Bought Apple Cider Version:
  2. Pour apple cider into slow cooker.
  3. Add brown sugar and stir until dissolved.
  4. Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, and sliced orange.
  5. Cover and cook on low for at least 2 hours.
  6. Before serving, strain out spices, cinnamon sticks, and orange slices.
  7. Homemade Apple Cider Version:
  8. Wash and quarter apples and orange; place in slow cooker.
  9. Add cloves, allspice, and cinnamon sticks.
  10. Pour enough water to cover the fruit.
  11. Cover and cook on high for 3 hours.
  12. Mash the fruit using a potato masher.
  13. Stir in brown sugar and cook an additional hour.
  14. Strain through fine mesh strainer, discarding solids.
  15. Serve warm, optionally garnished with cinnamon sticks or orange slices.

Notes

  • For an adult twist, add a splash of rum or bourbon when serving.
  • Add lemon or lime slices for a citrus twist.
  • Include cranberries or blueberries in the last hour for a berry infusion.
  • Add fresh ginger slices or cayenne pepper for a spicy kick.
  • Store leftovers refrigerated up to 5 days or freeze up to 3 months.
  • Reheat gently on stove or microwave, adding water or apple juice if needed.
