This Quick Hawaiian Roll French Toast recipe transforms sweet, fluffy Hawaiian rolls into a delightful breakfast treat. With a simple batter of eggs, milk, and warm spices, the rolls are soaked and pan-toasted to golden perfection. Served with optional powdered sugar and maple syrup, it’s an easy, crowd-pleasing meal perfect for busy mornings or special occasions.

Ingredients

French Toast Batter

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole milk recommended, but any dairy or non-dairy alternative works)
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg

Other Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 12 Hawaiian Rolls, sliced horizontally (preferably King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls)
  • Confectioners’ sugar (optional, for serving)
  • Maple syrup (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter: Whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg in a wide, deep bowl until fully combined, creating a flavorful soaking mixture.
  2. Heat the Griddle: Place a griddle or large skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter. Allow it to melt and coat the surface evenly for toasting the rolls.
  3. Dip the Hawaiian Rolls: Working in batches, dip each horizontally sliced Hawaiian roll half into the egg mixture. Ensure the roll is well saturated but not overly soaked, then gently shake off any excess liquid to prevent sogginess.
  4. Cook the Rolls: Place the soaked rolls onto the heated griddle. Cook each side until golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes per side, using a spatula to flip carefully.
  5. Keep Warm and Continue Cooking: Once cooked, transfer rolls to a plate and keep them warm. Add more butter to the griddle if needed and repeat the dipping and cooking process until all the rolls are toasted.
  6. Serve: Before serving, optionally sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar and drizzle with maple syrup to add sweetness and enhance presentation.

Notes

  • Use fresh Hawaiian rolls for the best texture and flavor.
  • You can substitute whole milk with almond, soy, or oat milk for a dairy-free option.
  • Adjust cinnamon and nutmeg quantities according to your spice preference.
  • Keep cooked french toast warm in a low oven (about 200°F) if preparing in large batches.
  • Adding powdered sugar and maple syrup is optional but highly recommended for extra sweetness.
