Crispy, flavorful Onion Ring Chips made by layering thinly sliced onions over shredded Parmesan cheese, seasoned with garlic, smoked paprika, and sea salt, then baked until perfectly crunchy. A unique and savory snack that’s easy to prepare and delightfully addictive.

Ingredients

Onion Ring Chips

  • 2 yellow onions
  • 5 ounces shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking your onion ring chips.
  2. Slice the Onions: Thinly slice the yellow onions using a mandolin set to about 1/28th inch thickness or with a very sharp knife to ensure even, delicate slices.
  3. Prepare the Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the shredded Parmesan cheese evenly to form a base layer.
  4. Arrange Onion Slices: Lay the thin onion slices over the Parmesan layer in a single, even layer, making sure they don’t overlap to promote crispiness.
  5. Season and Oil: Lightly brush the olive oil onto the top of the onions. Then sprinkle the sea salt, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper evenly over the onion slices for flavor.
  6. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and crispy, and the onions are golden and tender.
  7. Cool and Slice: Remove from the oven and let the chips cool for a few minutes to firm up. Then slice into chip-sized pieces before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mandolin for uniformly thin onion slices to ensure even baking and optimal crispiness.
  • Keep a close eye during baking as Parmesan can burn quickly once it becomes crispy.
  • Allow chips to cool completely if you want maximum crunchiness before slicing.
  • Seasonings can be adjusted according to taste preferences, and additional spices can be added for variation.
