These Orange Shortbread Cookies offer a delightful citrus twist on a classic buttery treat, featuring fresh orange zest and juice for a refreshing flavor. Perfectly crisp and tender, they’re ideal for holiday baking and festive occasions, topped with a sweet almond milk glaze and optional decorative sprinkles.

Ingredients

Cookie Dough

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ⅓ cup cane sugar
  • Zest of 1 medium orange
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange juice
  • A few drops of orange oil (optional, for more orange flavor)
  • 1¼ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt

Glaze

  • ½ cup plus 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon almond milk
  • Sequin sprinkles, for decorating (optional)
  • Zest of 1 orange, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream together the softened butter and cane sugar until the mixture is fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to combine evenly.
  3. Add Orange Flavorings: Mix in the orange zest, fresh orange juice, and orange oil if using, to infuse the dough with bright citrus flavor.
  4. Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Add the all-purpose flour and sea salt to the mixture, stirring until just combined to form a soft dough.
  5. Chill Dough if Necessary: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and flatten it into a 1-inch thick disk. If the dough feels sticky, wrap it and chill in the refrigerator for 15 to 30 minutes until firm but pliable.
  6. Roll and Cut Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to about ¼ inch thickness. Use 2-inch cookie cutters to cut out shapes, placing them on the prepared baking sheet. Keep any extra dough or cut-outs refrigerated until ready to bake.
  7. Bake the Cookies: Bake for 10 to 14 minutes, or until the edges are lightly browned and the cookies are firm to the touch.
  8. Cool: Remove the cookies from the oven and transfer them to wire racks to cool completely before glazing.
  9. Prepare Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and almond milk until smooth and pourable.
  10. Glaze and Decorate: Drizzle the glaze over the cooled cookies. Decorate with sequin sprinkles and additional orange zest if desired. Allow glaze to set before serving.
