Hush Puppies are savory little cornmeal balls that have been deep-fried to perfection. Easy to make and delicious, they are a classic Southern dish that makes a great snack or side dish.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup fine ground cornmeal
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cajun seasoning

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg, whisked
  • 1/2 small yellow onion, grated
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

Other:

  • 4 cups vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, kosher salt, baking powder, baking soda, and Cajun seasoning.
  2. Prepare Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine buttermilk, egg, onion, and garlic.
  3. Mix Batter: Fold wet ingredients into the dry mixture.
  4. Fry: Heat oil in a Dutch oven, then use a scoop to drop batter into the oil. Fry until golden brown.
  5. Serve: Drain on paper towels and serve warm with your favorite sauce.
