Made with sweet apples sautéed with warm cinnamon and topped with a crunchy oat and pecan crumble, this recipe is easy to prepare and baked to golden perfection. It’s a comforting dish that pairs wonderfully with milk, yogurt, or even ice cream for a delightful start to your day or a cozy dessert.

Ingredients

Apple Mixture

  • 6 sweet apples, chopped
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tsp coconut oil

Crumble Topping

  • 2/3 cup oats
  • 2/3 cup pecans
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tsp honey
  • About 1 tbsp water (for processing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Chop the sweet apples into bite-sized pieces. Heat 2 teaspoons of coconut oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add the chopped apples along with 1 tablespoon of cinnamon and a pinch of salt. Cover the pan and sauté the mixture for 2-3 minutes until the apples begin to soften and the spices are fragrant.
  2. Preheat Oven: While the apples are cooking, preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) to prepare for baking the crumble.
  3. Make the Crumble Topping: In a food processor, combine 2/3 cup oats, 2/3 cup pecans, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, and 2 teaspoons honey. Add about 1 tablespoon of water to help bind the mixture. Process until you get a crumbly texture that holds together when pressed.
  4. Assemble the Crumble: Prepare a small baking pan by oiling the surface or lining it with parchment paper. Spread the sautéed apples evenly on the bottom. Then, squeeze and crumble the processed oat mixture into larger pieces and spread them over the apples to form a thick, rustic topping.
  5. Bake: Place the baking pan in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the crumble topping turns golden brown and crispy.
  6. Serve and Enjoy: Allow the apple crumble to cool slightly. Serve warm with milk or yogurt for a healthy breakfast, or enjoy it as a dessert with a scoop of ice cream for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Using sweet apples like Fuji or Gala enhances the natural sweetness without needing extra sugar.
  • If you don’t have a food processor, a blender or immersion blender can be used to create the crumble topping.
  • The crumble topping can be made nut-free by substituting pecans with additional oats or seeds.
  • For a vegan option, use maple syrup instead of honey.
  • Make sure not to overcook the apples during sautéing to keep them tender but not mushy.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and warmed before serving.
