Delight in this irresistible Hawaiian Roll French Toast recipe, featuring sweet, fluffy King’s Hawaiian rolls soaked in a spiced egg mixture and perfectly toasted on a skillet. A quick and easy breakfast treat that serves six, topped with optional confectioners’ sugar and maple syrup for an extra touch of sweetness.

Ingredients

French Toast Mixture

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole milk preferred, but dairy or non-dairy alternatives work)
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg

Other Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 12 Hawaiian Rolls, sliced horizontally (King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls recommended)
  • Confectioners’ sugar (optional, for serving)
  • Maple syrup (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the egg mixture: In a wide, deep bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg until well combined to create a flavorful custard base.
  2. Heat the cooking surface: Place a griddle or large skillet over medium heat and brush it with 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter to prevent sticking and add richness.
  3. Soak the rolls: Working in batches, dip each horizontally sliced Hawaiian roll half into the egg and milk mixture, allowing it to soak until saturated but not soggy. Shake off any excess liquid gently.
  4. Cook the French toast: Place the soaked rolls onto the preheated griddle and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Flip each piece and cook an additional 2 to 3 minutes on the other side until evenly toasted.
  5. Keep warm and repeat: Transfer cooked French toast to a plate and keep warm while you repeat the soaking and cooking process with the remaining rolls. Add more butter to the griddle as needed.
  6. Serve and garnish: Once all rolls are cooked, sprinkle them with confectioners’ sugar and drizzle with maple syrup, if desired, for a sweet finishing touch. Serve immediately for best taste.

Notes

  • King’s Hawaiian rolls are preferred for their natural sweetness and soft texture, but any sweet dinner roll can work.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute milk with almond, soy, or oat milk and use a plant-based butter alternative.
  • Adjust the spices according to your preference; for example, add more cinnamon for extra warmth or omit nutmeg if unavailable.
  • Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your stove and skillet; watch for golden brown color as your indicator.
  • To keep French toast warm while cooking batches, place finished pieces in a single layer on a baking sheet in a low oven (about 200°F or 90°C).
