Ingredients

Cake:

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 1 cup hot water

Frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and prepare a baking pan.
  2. 2. Whisk flour, baking soda, and spices together.

  3. Cream butter and sugar, add egg, then molasses and hot water.
  4. Mix wet and dry ingredients, pour into pan, and bake 35–40 minutes.
  5. Cool completely before frosting.
