Cabbage steaks are a simple, flavorful vegetable side dish made by slicing a head of cabbage into thick slices, seasoning with garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper, then baking until tender. This easy recipe allows you to adjust the seasonings to your preference, making it a versatile and healthy addition to any meal.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 head cabbage
  • 2 tablespoons light olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) to prepare for baking the cabbage steaks.
  2. Prepare Cabbage: Cut the bottom off of the cabbage and place it flat side down on the cutting board. Slice the cabbage into 1-inch thick slices to form the ‘steaks’.
  3. Arrange Slices: Arrange the cabbage slices in a single layer on a large sheet pan or casserole dish, ensuring they are evenly spaced for uniform cooking.
  4. Season: Drizzle the slices with light olive oil, sprinkle minced garlic evenly over them, then season with salt and ground black pepper according to your taste preference.
  5. Cover and Bake: Cover the pan or casserole dish tightly with aluminum foil to retain moisture and bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until the cabbage core is tender and easily pierced with a fork.

Notes

  • You can adjust the amount of garlic based on your preference; add more for a stronger garlic flavor.
  • To add extra flavor, consider sprinkling smoked paprika or chili flakes before baking.
  • For a crispy edge, remove foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated, maintaining good texture with gentle reheating.
