A creamy, savory French Onion Dip made with caramelized onions, sour cream, mayonnaise, and a blend of flavorful seasonings. Perfect as a party appetizer or snack dip, this recipe features slowly cooked onions caramelized to golden perfection, combined with tangy and rich ingredients to create a delicious dip that pairs wonderfully with chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

Ingredients

Caramelized Onions

  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

Dip Base

  • 2 cups (16 ounces) sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté them until they are softened, about 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in the sugar, then reduce the heat to medium-low to gently caramelize the onions. Cook for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions turn a deep golden brown and develop a rich sweetness.
  2. Finish the onion mixture: Stir in the minced garlic and balsamic vinegar into the caramelized onions. Continue to cook and stir for another two minutes to blend the flavors and soften the garlic without burning it.
  3. Combine the French onion dip: In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, dried rosemary, and garlic powder until smooth and well combined. Fold in the caramelized onion mixture, ensuring it is evenly distributed throughout the dip.
  4. Chill the dip: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid, and refrigerate for at least one hour to allow the flavors to meld and the dip to chill thoroughly before serving.

Notes

  • For best results, caramelize the onions slowly over low heat to develop maximum sweetness and flavor without burning.
  • This dip can be made a day ahead and refrigerated to deepen the flavors even more.
  • Try serving with potato chips, vegetable sticks, or toasted baguette slices.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, especially salt and Worcestershire sauce, to suit your preference.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
