Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups Flour
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • ½ tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 cup warm water (may not need all)

Frying & Topping

  • Oil for Frying (enough to fill 3 inches in pot)
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 2 tsp Cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder thoroughly to ensure even distribution.
  2. Add Water and Form Dough: Slowly stir in the warm water a little at a time until a soft dough forms; you might not need the entire cup. Mix until all ingredients come together.
  3. Rest the Dough: Allow the dough to sit for 5 minutes; this resting period helps the flour hydrate for easier rolling.
  4. Divide Dough: Roll the dough out slightly on a floured surface and cut it into six equal pieces for uniform cooking.
  5. Roll Out Circles: Roll each piece into a ½ inch thick circle to prepare for frying.
  6. Heat Oil: Pour enough oil into a deep pot to fill about 3 inches and heat until hot enough for frying (about 350°F or 175°C).
  7. Fry Dough Circles: Carefully fry each dough circle in the hot oil until golden brown and puffed slightly. Flip to cook the other side evenly.
  8. Drain Excess Oil: Remove the fried dough and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  9. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: Mix the sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl while the dough is still warm.
  10. Sugar the Elephant Ears: Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture generously over the warm fried dough.
  11. Serve: Serve the elephant ears immediately for the best taste and texture, enjoying the warm, sweet treat.

Notes

  • Ensure oil temperature is maintained around 350°F to avoid greasy, undercooked elephant ears.
  • Use warm water to help the dough come together more easily.
  • Elephant ears are best enjoyed fresh and warm for optimal crispness.
  • You can adjust the cinnamon sugar ratio to suit your taste preference.
  • If you prefer a different shape, the dough can be rolled into ovals or rectangles instead of circles.
