These Easy Homemade Biscuits are flaky, buttery, and perfect for any meal. Made with simple pantry ingredients, they come together quickly and bake to golden perfection in under 15 minutes. Ideal for breakfast, brunch, or alongside dinner, these biscuits boast a tender crumb thanks to cold butter and gentle mixing techniques.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp baking powder (aluminum free)
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 3/4 tsp fine sea salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold (8 Tbsp)
  • 1 cup half and half (minus 2 Tbsp)
  • 1/2 Tbsp melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Butter: Dice the cold unsalted butter into 1/2-inch cubes and refrigerate until ready to use. This helps keep the butter cold for flakier biscuits.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, aluminum-free baking powder, granulated sugar, and fine sea salt until evenly combined.
  3. Cut in Butter: Add the cold diced butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry blender, two knives, or a fork, cut the butter into the flour until the largest butter pieces resemble pea-sized crumbs. This ensures flaky layers.
  4. Add Half and Half: Pour in 1 cup minus 2 Tbsp of half and half all at once. Stir gently just until the mixture comes together and is mostly moistened. Avoid over-mixing to prevent tough biscuits.
  5. Shape Dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. If sticky, lightly dust the top with flour. Pat the dough into a rectangle, fold it in half, then pat into another rectangle. Repeat folding one more time, then pat into a 5×10-inch rectangle about 3/4 inch thick.
  6. Cut Biscuits: Dip a 2 1/2-inch round biscuit cutter into flour to prevent sticking and cut out 8 biscuits from the dough. Gather the scraps, form into a rectangle again, and cut an additional 2 biscuits.
  7. Bake Biscuits: Place the biscuits 1 inch apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 450°F (232°C) for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and biscuits are cooked through.
  8. Finish and Serve: As soon as the biscuits come out of the oven, brush the tops with 1/2 Tbsp melted butter for added flavor and shine. Transfer to a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Keep the butter and half and half cold to ensure flaky biscuits.
  • Do not overwork the dough; handle it gently to maintain tenderness.
  • Use a sharp biscuit cutter and press straight down without twisting to keep edges flaky.
  • For softer biscuits, you may brush additional melted butter after cooling.
  • Biscuits are best served warm but can be reheated in a toaster oven for freshness.
