Ingredients

Chicken Wings

  • 3 pounds chicken wings

Rub Blend

  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground oregano

BBQ Sauce

  • 1 cup BBQ sauce, divided

Instructions

  1. Mix the Rub: In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, sea salt, garlic powder, smoked paprika, chili powder, onion powder, and ground oregano until evenly blended.
  2. Season the Wings: Pat the chicken wings dry and season both sides thoroughly with the prepared rub to ensure full flavor absorption.
  3. Prepare the Crock Pot: Lightly spray the bottom and sides of the crock pot with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking, then arrange the seasoned wings evenly in the pot.
  4. Coat with BBQ Sauce: Pour half a cup of BBQ sauce over the wings and toss gently to coat them well, distributing the sauce evenly.
  5. Slow Cook the Wings: Cover the crock pot and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours, or on high for 1 to 2 hours, until the wings reach an internal temperature of 165°F and are tender.
  6. Broil for Finish: Carefully remove the wings and place them on a wire rack set atop a lined baking sheet. Brush with the remaining ½ cup of BBQ sauce, then broil on high for 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce caramelizes and becomes sticky. Flip halfway through broiling if desired for even caramelization.

Notes

  • Ensure wings are fully cooked by checking that the internal temperature reaches 165°F with a meat thermometer.
  • Use a wire rack on the baking sheet during broiling to allow even heat circulation and prevent sogginess.
  • Adjust chili powder quantity for desired heat level.
  • For extra crispiness, you can broil a bit longer but watch closely to prevent burning.
  • Leftover wings keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and can be reheated in the oven or air fryer.
