Ingredients

2 large sweet onions, finely chopped

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

¾ cup milk

Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Finely chop the sweet onions and place them in a large bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Gradually add the milk to the dry ingredients, stirring until a smooth batter forms.
  4. Fold the chopped onions into the batter, ensuring they are evenly coated.
  5. In a large skillet, heat about ½ inch of oil over medium heat until hot.
  6. Spoon the batter into the hot oil, flattening each spoonful slightly. Fry for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  7. Remove the fritters from the oil and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For a cheesy twist, add ½ cup shredded cheddar or Parmesan cheese.
  • Add 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh herbs like parsley or chives for freshness.
  • For a spicy version, include a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.
  • Substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour blend for gluten-free option.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven for about 10 minutes to maintain crispiness.
  • Use yellow onions as an alternative but note they have a stronger flavor.
  • Milk can be substituted with dairy-free alternatives if needed.
  • Frying is preferred over baking to keep fritters crispy.
  • Freeze cooled fritters in airtight container up to 3 months; reheat in oven.
