A smooth and creamy homemade buttercream frosting that’s perfect for decorating cakes and cupcakes. It blends unsalted butter, confectioner’s sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla to create a fluffy, sweet frosting with a delicate vanilla flavor.

Ingredients

Frosting Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (225g, room temperature)
  • 1 lb confectioner’s sugar (454g), sifted
  • 3 tbsp heavy whipping cream (45mL)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract (15mL)

Instructions

  1. Whip Butter and Salt: Using a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment or a hand mixer, whip the room temperature unsalted butter and salt together for about one minute until creamy and smooth.
  2. Add Confectioner’s Sugar: Gradually sift in the confectioner’s sugar in several batches, mixing on low speed after each addition to avoid a sugar cloud. Stop to scrape down the sides and bottom of the mixing bowl often, continuing this process until all sugar is incorporated.
  3. Incorporate Cream and Vanilla: Add one tablespoon of heavy cream to the mixture while continuing to mix on low speed. Then pour in the vanilla extract. Increase speed and beat the frosting until it reaches a light, fluffy, and even consistency. For a thinner texture, you can add a little more cream or milk as needed.

Notes

  • Make sure the butter is softened to room temperature for easier whipping and a smoother texture.
  • Sifting the confectioner’s sugar prevents lumps and ensures a silky frosting.
  • Adjust the amount of cream to get your desired frosting thickness—more for thinner, less for stiffer.
  • This frosting can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week; re-whip before using.
  • Perfect for decorating cakes, cupcakes, and cookies.
