This creamy and flavorful mashed sweet potatoes recipe is a perfect side dish for any meal. Made with tender boiled sweet potatoes, enriched with garlic, butter, sour cream, and optional parmesan cheese, it offers a deliciously smooth and savory taste. Garnished with fresh parsley, this comfort food classic is easy to prepare and serves six people.

Ingredients

Sweet Potatoes

  • 4 pounds sweet potatoes
  • 4 teaspoons salt, divided
  • 2 cloves garlic

Dairy & Seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup reduced-fat sour cream
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, fresh shredded (optional)
  • 1/4 cup milk (if desired)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Sweet Potatoes: Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into 2-inch cubes to ensure even cooking.
  2. Boil Sweet Potatoes: Place the cubed sweet potatoes in a large 6-quart pot and cover with water by an inch. Add 3 teaspoons of salt. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Drain and Add Ingredients: Drain the cooked sweet potatoes thoroughly. Return them to the pot or place in a large bowl and add the unsalted butter, reduced-fat sour cream, minced garlic cloves, remaining 1 teaspoon salt, and shredded parmesan cheese if using.
  4. Mash the Potatoes: Using a potato masher, mash the mixture until smooth. If you prefer a lighter or creamier texture, gradually add milk while mashing until the desired consistency is reached.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle freshly chopped parsley over the mashed sweet potatoes for a fresh, colorful garnish. Serve warm alongside your favorite main dishes.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free version, substitute butter and sour cream with plant-based alternatives.
  • Adding milk is optional and can be adjusted for desired creaminess.
  • Parmesan cheese adds a slightly nutty flavor but can be omitted for a simpler dish.
  • Fresh garlic cloves provide a stronger garlic flavor compared to garlic powder; adjust to personal taste.
  • Use fresh parsley to enhance both flavor and presentation.
