This creamy mashed potatoes recipe combines tender boiled potatoes with smooth cream cheese, whipping cream, and butter to create a rich and comforting side dish perfect for any meal. It’s easy to make and serves as a delicious accompaniment to a variety of main courses.

Ingredients

Potatoes

  • 3 lb potatoes, cut into 1-inch pieces

Dairy

  • 4 ounces cream cheese (½ a brick)
  • ⅓ cup whipping cream
  • 4 tablespoons butter

Seasoning

  • Salt, to taste (about 2 teaspoons recommended)

Instructions

  1. Boil Potatoes: Add the cut potatoes to a large pot and cover them with water. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-high. Continue boiling for about 15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and soft when pierced with a fork. Drain the water and return the potatoes to the pot.
  2. Add Ingredients: Add the cream cheese, whipping cream, and butter to the hot potatoes. Use a potato masher to mash everything together until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  3. Season: Season the mashed potatoes with salt to taste, stirring well to evenly distribute the flavor. We recommend about 2 teaspoons of salt.

Notes

  • For creamier mashed potatoes, use a hand mixer instead of a masher.
  • Adjust the amount of whipping cream for your preferred consistency.
  • This recipe can be made ahead and gently reheated with a splash of cream to restore creaminess.
