This Chocolate Espresso Banana Bread is a delightful combination of rich chocolate flavor, subtle hints of banana, and a generous amount of chocolate chips in every bite. It’s a perfect treat for any time of day!

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ tsp espresso powder

Wet Ingredients

  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 cup ripe bananas, mashed

Add Ins

  • ½ cup dark chocolate chips + a few extra for the top
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips + a few extra for the top
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour for dusting chocolate chips

Optional Topping

  • ¼ banana, 2 long thin slices off of a banana
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Mixing the dry ingredients – Preheat the oven to 350°F, grease a loaf pan. Whisk all dry ingredients in a medium bowl and set aside.
  2. Mixing the wet ingredients – In a separate bowl, mix oil and sugars until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla, sour cream, and mashed bananas.
  3. Mixing the dry into the wet – Fold dry ingredients into wet until almost fully incorporated. Dredge chocolate chips in flour, fold into the batter. Pour into pan, top with reserved chocolate chips.
  4. Baking – Bake at 350°F for 55-65 minutes. Optionally, brulee banana slices with sugar using a kitchen torch.
  5. Cooling and serving – Allow to cool for 20 minutes in the pan, then transfer to cool completely before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Placing banana slices on top of bread is optional.
  • Do not overbake; check doneness with a toothpick.
  • Let the bread cool completely before slicing.
