Ingredients

Cheese Filling

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

Puff Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed if frozen

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Prepare the Cheese Filling: In a small bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and granulated sugar together until the mixture is smooth and creamy, ensuring the sugar is fully incorporated.
  3. Prepare the Puff Pastry: Unroll the thawed puff pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface. If necessary, use a rolling pin to gently roll it out into a rectangle approximately 9 by 13 inches. Cut the pastry into 8 equal rectangles.
  4. Score the Pastry: Transfer the cut rectangles to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly. Using a paring knife, carefully score a smaller rectangle inside each pastry piece, leaving a ½-inch border all around. Be cautious not to cut all the way through to allow the edges to puff independently.
  5. Assemble the Danishes: Spread about 2 tablespoons of the cream cheese mixture evenly onto the smaller rectangle inside each piece of dough, avoiding the edges. In a small bowl, beat the egg and water together to create an egg wash. Brush the egg wash gently along the exposed edges of the puff pastry to achieve a golden and glossy finish when baked.
  6. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the pastries for 12-15 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed up.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove the Cheese Danishes from the oven and let them cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving to allow the filling to set.

Notes

  • You can sprinkle a little powdered sugar on top for extra sweetness after cooling.
  • For added flavor, mix in a teaspoon of vanilla extract or lemon zest into the cream cheese filling.
  • If puff pastry is frozen, ensure it is fully thawed according to package directions before using.
  • Use a sharp knife for scoring to avoid tearing the dough.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate up to 4 days.
