This classic French Onion Dip features deeply caramelized onions blended into creamy sour cream and cream cheese, delivering a rich and savory appetizer perfect for parties, snacks, or gatherings. The slow, stovetop-caramelized onions with a hint of honey add a touch of sweetness that complements the tangy base, garnished with fresh chives for a burst of color and freshness.

Ingredients

For the Caramelized Onions

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • Salt to taste

For the Dip

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese
  • 1 tbsp chopped chives, plus more for garnishing
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat Butter and Oil: In a hot skillet, melt the butter together with the olive oil over medium-low heat to prepare for cooking the onions.
  2. Caramelize Onions: Add the thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt to the skillet. Cook slowly over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, allowing the onions to soften and turn a rich golden brown and caramelized, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
  3. Add Honey: Once the onions are deeply caramelized towards the end of cooking, turn off the heat and stir in the honey to evenly incorporate a subtle sweetness into the onions. Adjust honey quantity to taste.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Transfer the caramelized onions, along with any flavorful juices left in the skillet, into a large bowl. Add the sour cream, cream cheese, and one tablespoon of chopped chives.
  5. Season and Mix: Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined and creamy.
  6. Adjust Flavors: Taste the dip and modify the seasoning by adding extra salt, pepper, or honey according to your preference.
  7. Garnish: Just before serving, garnish the dip with additional chopped chives and some caramelized onions to enhance appearance and flavor.
  8. Serve: Serve the French Onion Dip chilled or at room temperature with your choice of chips, crackers, or fresh vegetable sticks.

Notes

  • Use medium-low heat to prevent burning the onions during caramelization.
  • The honey can be omitted or adjusted based on your desired sweetness level.
  • For a tangier dip, consider adding a splash of lemon juice or vinegar.
  • The dip can be made a few hours ahead to let flavors meld; store covered in the refrigerator.
  • Serve with potato chips, pita chips, or fresh vegetables like carrots and celery for variety.
