This Caramelized Onion Dip with Blue Cheese is a deliciously creamy and tangy appetizer perfect for parties or casual snacking. Rich caramelized onions blended with savory blue cheese and a touch of honey create a balanced flavor that pairs wonderfully with buffalo wings or fresh vegetables.

Ingredients

For the Caramelized Onions

  • 3 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 2 large Sweet Onions, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Kosher Salt (for cooking onions)
  • 1 tbsp Balsamic Glaze

For the Dip

  • 1 (16 oz) tub Sour Cream (recommend FAGE)
  • 4 oz Blue Cheese, crumbled
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Vegetable Bouillon
  • 1 tsp Honey
  • Kosher Salt and Black Pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat and caramelize onions: In a large nonstick pan over medium heat, add olive oil, finely chopped sweet onions, and a pinch of kosher salt. Cook the onions for 20 minutes, stirring often, until they become soft and start to brown.
  2. Add balsamic glaze: Stir in the balsamic glaze and continue cooking for a few more minutes until the onions resemble a rich, caramelized texture. Remove the pan from heat and set the onions aside to cool slightly.
  3. Combine dip ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, add the sour cream, crumbled blue cheese, caramelized onions, garlic powder, vegetable bouillon, and honey. Stir thoroughly to combine all flavors evenly.
  4. Season the dip: Taste the mixture and adjust seasoning by adding kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper as needed.
  5. Rest the dip: Let the dip rest refrigerated for 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
  6. Serve: Enjoy this rich, flavorful dip with buffalo wings, fresh vegetables, or your preferred snacks.

Notes

  • Using sweet onions enhances the natural sweetness when caramelized.
  • Balsamic glaze adds a nice depth and slight tang but can be substituted with balsamic vinegar if needed, though the glaze is thicker and sweeter.
  • For a stronger blue cheese flavor, add more crumbled blue cheese to taste.
  • This dip can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated to deepen the flavors.
  • Adjust honey according to preferred sweetness.
