Ingredients

Pie Crust

  • 1 frozen pie crust, thawed and baked (preferably all butter, gluten-free)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Cinnamon and sugar for sprinkling

Apple Topping

  • 1 stick (4 tablespoons) butter
  • 2/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 4 green Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced

Toppings

  • Good quality vanilla ice cream (e.g., Häagen-Dazs)
  • Chopped caramelized walnuts (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) and position the rack in the center of the oven to ensure even baking.
  2. Prepare Crust: Lay the thawed pie crust flat on a cookie sheet lined with unbleached parchment paper. Brush the crust evenly with 2 tablespoons of melted butter, then sprinkle generously with cinnamon and sugar.
  3. Bake Crust: Bake the crust in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the crust turns slightly golden and crisp. Remove from oven and set aside.
  4. Cook Apples: While the crust bakes, melt 1 stick of butter in a large pan over medium heat. Once melted, add the light brown sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon, stirring to combine. Add the peeled, cored, and sliced apples to the pan and reduce the heat to low. Simmer the apples, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and tender, about 6-8 minutes. Remove from heat.
  5. Assemble Dessert: Cut the baked pie crust into 8 equal triangular slices and arrange them on dessert plates. Place a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on each crust triangle.
  6. Add Apple Topping and Nuts: Spoon the warm cinnamon apples over the ice cream, allowing the heat to slightly melt the ice cream. Finish by sprinkling chopped caramelized walnuts on top for added crunch.
  7. Serve Immediately: Serve the apple pie a la mode right away for the best texture and flavor experience. Enjoy the harmonious blend of crisp crust, warm spiced apples, cool ice cream, and crunchy nuts.

Notes

  • You can use any store-bought frozen pie crust, but an all-butter gluten-free crust adds excellent flavor and caters to gluten-sensitive diets.
  • Adjust the cinnamon and sugar to your taste preference; more cinnamon will add a stronger spice note.
  • If you prefer softer apples, simmer slightly longer but watch carefully to avoid turning them to mush.
  • Caramelized walnuts can be prepared ahead and stored, or purchase pre-made for convenience.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute butter and vanilla ice cream with plant-based alternatives.
